An AI brand strategy has two jobs. Picking tools is neither.

Picking tools is an AI plan. A brand strategy for the AI era decides what every tool must get right about you, and what assistants tell buyers when you are not in the room.

Adapt slides a blank rule card from a small stack through an open window, standing at a stone shelf in a plaster room filled with aqua, lavender and peach daylight.
The short answer

An AI brand strategy decides two things. First, how the AI tools your teams use make work that is on brand: your brand turned into rules, approved examples, and checks that every tool follows. Second, how AI assistants describe your brand when buyers ask: clear, consistent, verifiable facts about you in public. Choosing tools comes after both.

It is easy to start an AI plan with tools. Which assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini), which image model, which seats, which prompts. Those are real decisions, and they are not a brand strategy.

Brand strategy has always answered a few hard questions: who we are for, what we promise, what only we can say, and what we refuse to do. AI does not change those questions. It changes who applies the answers. Your brand is now applied by software your team uses every day, and described by software your buyers ask before they ever call you.

So an AI brand strategy has two jobs. One points inward, one points outward.

Job one

Every AI your team uses makes work that sounds like you

Your brand guidelines were written for people. A designer reads them once and carries the judgment. An AI tool reads whatever is in front of it for this one request, and nothing else. A PDF on a shared drive is not in the request.

The inward job turns the brand into something a tool can follow: the rules that decide a draft, the claims you can prove and how strongly, an approved example next to every voice rule, and a check that catches the draft that drifted. Examples matter as much as rules. Anthropic's prompting guidance for Claude calls examples one of the most reliable ways to steer a model's tone and structure.

Then decide who can change a rule. If anyone can edit the prompt, your brand is whatever the last person typed.

Job two

AI describes you accurately when buyers ask

Buyers now ask assistants who to shortlist, what a company does, and how it compares. The answer is assembled from what is public about you.

The outward job makes the public truth easy to find and hard to misread: one clear sentence for what you do, the same facts on every page and profile, sources beside the claims that matter, and pages that answer the questions buyers actually ask. Google says there is no special trick for its AI answers: there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Clear, useful, crawlable pages are the requirement.

What stays

The strategy underneath does not change

Positioning, audience, promise, and what you will not say are still human calls. AI can generate the work. It cannot decide what only your company should say, make, or refuse. The new part is making those decisions travel: into every tool on the inside, and into every answer on the outside.

That is why the strategy should live in something the company owns, readable by people and any AI tool, and changed only when a person approves the change. We call ours a customer-owned Brand Brain, and we publish how it is built.

Two quick answers

Where it sits next to the rest of your plan

Is it the same as an AI marketing strategy? No. An AI marketing strategy decides where AI speeds up the work: tools, workflows, channels. An AI brand strategy decides what that work must get right about you, and how you are described when AI answers for you.

Who should own it? The company. Agencies and tools can help build it, but the decisions about what the brand says, and the rules AI tools follow, belong with the people who live with the brand. More on that in what to keep in-house when hiring an agency.

If you want a partner for the strategy itself, this is the work we lead.

Start here

Two tests to run this week

The inside test. Take one piece of work your team makes every week. Ask two people to make it with AI, separately, from the same brief. Put the drafts side by side. Every difference that matters is a rule or an example your brand has not written down yet.

The outside test. Open three assistants in fresh chats. Ask each the questions a buyer would: what does this company do, who is it for, how is it different, what does it cost. Mark every answer you would not approve. That list is your outward job.

Neither test needs a vendor. Both tell you where your AI brand strategy starts.
